Identité des mots, identité des diagrammes : une approche kaplanienne ?

Abstract : Identity conditions play a fundamental role in the debate on the epistemological status of diagrams. In this regard, both detractors and supporters of their use as evidence share the same assumption, which consists in extending to diagrams the distinction between type and token, normally applied to words. In this article, we intend to discuss this assumption. In the first part, we will show that the distinction between type and token, as a criterion of identity of words, does not bring about consensus in the philosophy of language. We will see, in particular, how David Kaplan rejected this criterion and proposed an alternative approach, inspired by the conception of common currency developed by Kripke. In the second part, we will study the possibility of extending the Kaplanian approach to diagrams, thanks to some historical considerations concerning the transmission of Greek mathematical texts.
