Evolution conjointe des élevages et des systèmes d’alimentation depuis 1960 : une analyse dans six bassins laitiers

Abstract : Since the 1960s, the dairy industry has become progressively more international, which has had consequences for local production systems and the natural environment. We compared the dynamics of livestock farming in 6 dairy-producing regions and evaluated farm sustainability by examining 4 forage system approaches. In Uruguay, Brazil, Senegal, and France, dairy production has intensified over time and farms’ main fodder areas have grown in size; farmers are also making effective use of natural areas and forage crops and resorting significantly more frequently to inputs. In France in the 2000s, farmers started looking for ways to increase their profits by opening up to international markets and exploring exportation possibilities.
