La socialisation langagière : un cadre pour l'émergence concomitante de la compétence langagière et la spécialisation universitaire

Abstract : In the French university system today, nearly all students are required to take language courses related to their major course of study. In this sense, the development of language competence goes hand-in-hand with the emergence of disciplinary knowledge. However, there currently is no single theory used in Languages for Specific Purposes, didactics or linguistics which encompasses such learning situations. One particularly useful framework that captures the close relationship between language, specialisation, and culture is 'language socialisation'; it also includes the very powerful concept of indexicality. While this framework can be applied to the wide variety of language-learning contexts found in French higher education today, in this paper we will examine one specific instance of specialized language competence: the use of politeness in the job application letter.
