Les musiciens d’Église de la Vienne à l’épreuve de la Révolution et du Concordat

Abstract : Several studies have investigated the conditions that enabled some French church musicians to continue their profession after the last churches were closed in 1793. But what happened to those musicians who were forced to change professions? Based on the latest findings of the research laboratory Musiciens d’Église en France à l’époque moderne (Muséfrem), this article reveals the forces at work in regulating church musician career changes and examines the Concordat reconstruction programs, focusing on the Vienne department. A dual analysis of civil registries and administrative documents allows for the first systematic study of a clearly defined locality and sampling of individuals.
