Abstract : Until their closure in 1790, the capitulary choir schools (educational institutions run by canonical chapters) were the sole institutions dispensing musical training. Difficulties with the altered social status and careers of musicians in suppressed chapters inevitably led to questions about the future of the children who had been brought up and educated in them. This article focuses primarily on available sources pertaining to churches in the Puy-de-Dôme department of Auvergne to shed light on this sacrificed generation.
