Du théâtre historique au théâtre politique : la régénération en débat (1748-1790)

Abstract : From historical to political plays: debating about regeneration (1748-1790) In the second half of the 18th Century, the use of history by the theater and the verisimilitude of plots and costumes are questioned. Voltaire will contribute to this debate with his tragedy Semiramis, as well as Diderot, d'Alembert, and Rousseau who will more particularly wonder about the best way to describe violent events. The " patriotic tragedy " created by Marie-Joseph Chénier in 1789 will inherit from it. Based on the national historical models, this useful, political and educational entertainment will quickly give the way to the accounts of the revolutionary events.
