L'analyse du discours : à la recherche de l'interface entre texte et contexte

Abstract : Discourse analysis, as the situated description of language in its context, is a useful tool for comprehending the relationship between text and context. A number of methodologies are frequently used by discourse analysts to uncover this relationship, by providing descriptions of the various historical, cultural and social schemata particular to discourse communities. The present paper combines results from a previous study that uses these different methodologies. Suggesting that a multi-modal approach is able to capture relevant aspects of both text and context, it focuses on the textual and contextual significance of a particular discourse genre, the field account in geology. Using a case study, the article identifies the discourse genre as the meeting site for both text and context: a genre provides linguistic and discoursal schemata for communication within a group; furthermore, due to their specific clusters of features, these generic schemata imply relevant context and meaning to experienced genre users.
